I had what would probably be considered the WORST CASE first app scenario: my very first app went in a dup round and lost badly.

What really helped me "get" CFUD apps is just stalking the voting community and paying attention to the applications that did well (a good recent example is the Poison Ivy app in this post). Sometimes it's easier to think of it as writing a first-person fanfic soliloquy.
