but yeah, i have feelings about hal and i think that people who generally think of him as solely a douche haven't read a good deal of his canon -- he was literally the first person to tell zatanna that identity crisis wasn't our fault and pulled her away. i also really love him when he was the spectre and for all my love of magic users, i think i might like him more than i did corrigan. just don't tell anyone else i said that. :')

i also make icons!! if you might want some variations. back on lj i often would offer them to anyone that was willing to app a requested character and i think it's only fair i do the same here oh wow this is turning into a run-on and incredibly tl;dr but can you tell i'm enthusiastic?? i am!

I am forever biased to love Green Lanterns regardless of what writers do to them, and as much as I love to make fun of Hal and his moments of sheer golden age brilliance I love him to pieces (especially rereading the stories around Kyle's intro and oh god Hal stop being crazy and sad). it makes me sad when people just..don't want to see him ever or just remember the worst writing. which is why it caught me by surprise that he's on a request list.

and aaaah you're a sweetie for the offer <3 I might take you up on them but in the meantime if you'd like to throw your favorite GL story titles at me that'd be great and you'd be my favorite person since fuck this is an intensive canon review

Yes! I generally feel similarly, but fandom has sort of latched onto that LOOK AT THESE TUMBLR IMAGES, WE HAVEN'T READ ANYTHING ABOUT HIM BUT I THINK HE HAD SEX WITH AN UNDERAGE GIRL?? BASH BASH BASH. I feel similarly about Hawkman. Bad writing and awkward moments overshadow what a character has been and in the hearts of their fans still is.

Okay, I'm ngl, I tend to lovelovelove Silver Age JLA and I know it's not GL, but his run as the Spectre (v4; it ran from... I think 2001-2003? I might be off!) I think is really essential to his character evolution and I always find it really unfortunate that once he came back in Green Lantern: Rebirth that writers just threw all this amazing character development out of the window. I think at a certain point the title gets a little dated, but #11 & #12 are some of my favorite issues ever written. (Basically, if I were going to play him? I'd probably pull him from that era.)

I think Final Night is probably an essential read and around the tie-ins, which I think would be about GL v3 about #75 toward like... #82? Don't quote me on it. I would also suggest Brave and the Bold v2 #30 (a team-up with Doctor Fate, which I found to be an odd but excellent combo) and #20-22 (a team-up with the Phantom Stranger and Green Arrow). The Green Arrow/Green Lantern team-ups are important -- I'd go with what are in the Neal Adams TPBS; skimming my shelf, the issues included are: Green Lantern (v2, I think?) #76-77, #83-87 & 89, Showcase #22 (but this is like, wayyyy old and basically is just... entertaining), and Flash (probably v1) #217-219. Flash & Green Lantern: The Brave and the Bold is an important read and I would think that Emerald Dawn (and Emerald Dawn II) would probably be important?

As painful as they are to read, I'd probably at least skim all the Crises titles. I believe he's been involved in all of them? :|a

While it is not what I'd call the most important thing to read, I'd pick up Green Lantern: Willworld. I tend to like what DeMatteis writes for Hal and I thought the art was gorgeous. It was released as an OGN, so I think it tends to get overlooked, esp. since it's from 2001. That's... most of what I can think of off the top of my head and what jumps out from both my comic files and what's on my comic shelves. I'd probably do some skimming of his appearances in Green Arrow and Flash titles, since their friendships are very stressed upon in the DCU.

I'd link you to CnC's for him (or Rikki), but we post right before ATP and I don't think a lot of people check back on it and it is always crappy to come in late and get no responses. :(

GL (1990, which um. v3?) #50, 60-64, 101, 105-106? There was also a Final Night Parallax title called either Hal Jordan or Parallax: Emerald Night (I assume any Final Night torrent would include it...).

There is also a chunk of Zero Hour he was in, but I think the trade is pretty rare/out of print, so I would encourage downloading that, too.

Legacy: The Last Will & Testament of Hal Jordan was nice. I think the art was solid and the story was good enough that I picked up the trade a while ago, but I haven't sat down and read it since it came out. I have good memories of it, however!

It's mostly the post-Final Night and pre-Rebirth stuff I need to look at closely since idk if I ever read those in the first place (which is sad but eh what can you do sometimes). But no seriously this helps enormously and if there's a way i can make it up in fic or icon form till I throw this guy into memes let me know

Yeah, they're important, but it's kind of... some of it is a bit of a hard read, whether because of the subject matter or the writing or the art. That time period could be a little rocky, but I definitely would always suggest Spectre v4, though toward the end it's embarrassingly dated (and not written by DeMatteis). I'd offer some uploads for you, but I don't think I have much of this on my HD. I know I have Spectre v4 and a lot of Justice League titles and I definitely have the Phantom Stranger issues of BatB, but I don't think I have the Doctor Fate one.

Oh wait, reading too fast, wordvomit. But yeah, HECK YEAH top hats on AIM. If you're leaning more toward an eventual CnC app, I can lead the Green Arrow player on over here!
