Created from a fractured mind and its magics, five levitating islands claim an endless sky, shaped and sustained by the hapless dreamers they hold. Whether you arrive through a lazy daydream or fright-filled night terror, souls from every dimension and universe are bound by a single tenet in L'arc en Reves—to please the mistress, a sleeping royal in the far off towers who fell to grief and never again rose. It is from her mourning and longing for companionship that the central island was first given form, and from the unwilling residents collected therein that the outer-islands came to be, reflecting every age of technology and manner of spellcraft in existence. The various cities, some vast and rich, others dusty and forgotten, are governed loosely by four mysterious figures known as The Imperial Weavers, rarely seen or heard but often felt in times of need.
Residents—and all arrivals become residents, for it is a place marooned from all others—may delude themselves into living their lives as it pleases them, but only if the city should deem it useful to the princess will their delusion remain. If your presence entertains her or brings her relief, luck will bend to your will, driven to serve you in so far as needed to serve her. But if you should offer her nothing, the city in turn will become an unyielding, chaotic cage in which no sense of order can survive, pressuring you meticulously, mercilessly until you suit her needs and wants.
If time is a fickle mistress, L’arc en Reves is doubly so. Welcome and please, try to enjoy your stay, for it shall be a very long one.
