I used to be a Mercedes Lackey fan, and she had a book where she tried to juggle a metric ton of characters... though this also meant I saw how couldn't keep them straight, sob. |D I suspect Tolkien's better with that. Maybe he kept notes of his own!
This is where STE's policy can be helpful! She could go months knowing she's Thingol's (sp?) daughter and an Elf and all that, and only remember the Man she fell in love with later, when you chose to return that.
