The mods are fans of Professor Layton and also a lot of survival horror games like Silent Hill and Lone Survivor, so many of the puzzle rooms have a bit of a horror bent -- there's one that consists of a bunch of jail cells, for instance, or a hospital. Characters usually have to solve several smaller puzzles to complete a room; many of them are Laytonesque, although there are also logic puzzles and riddles and so on.
And then there are also puzzle rooms that consist of things like asking characters moral questions or just exposing them to something they hate/fear.
Our Professor Layton cast is great, though the Hershel Layton we have is Hershel circa Miracle Mask, so he's still actually still in his nerdy gawky teenage doormat phase.
As for the size of the game, I can only say that I've had tons of fun in larger games and was a little gunshy about picking a smaller game myself, but I've found that the players here are really amazing and the smaller size actually does help if you want to get involved in plot, because... well, there's room for anyone to get involved in plot if they so desire :). So yeah, it's not for everyone, but it's been amazing for me.
