idk, this fandom seems to have a hateboner for sara. mostly because he gets in the way of the most popular ships and the fandom is 90% dumb fangirls who only care about shipping =/ i even saw one person trying to claim they hated him because he was a decent villain at first and then they gave him a sympathetic backstory so he stopped being a good bad guy to them. like oh ok sorry they made an antagonist with a backstory that actually explains his motivations rather than just another painfully idiotic 2D power hungry evil king

but yeah literally the only real hint of development for yuuri in the anime was after sara straight-up forced him to destroy a fleet of ships for him and even yuuri couldn't miss how evil that was. except then that development pretty much came down to an episode of him being depressed back home and then returning to talk to sara alone and be like "GRRR I AM SO ANGRY AT YOU but i am going to continue trusting you because you're my friend ok"

it was dumb but actually worked pretty well for sara's development oddly enough (imo anyway). because he's pretty much got that attitude of "i can't trust anyone they'll all leave me in the end so the best thing to do is play nice and use people as long as possible because i've kinda had to be this huge manipulative jerk all along just to survive and people would just hate me from the start of they knew me for real and then i wouldn't even be able to use them to get shit done". and so yuuri seeing him at his worst and then promising to still trust him is kind of what makes sara genuinely trust him and like him. like, you need to let him fuck you over once and then forgive him for it for him to want to be friends for real. idk he's complicated and dumb and precious i have a lot of sara feelings okay ; ;

ahhh one of the main problems for me was also the fact that the anime was way too geared for shippers. i have pairings i like and stuff too, but the author of kkm doesn't state this is a BL series (even for all the jokes and subtext and everything) it's definitely a series for females but like the shipping shouldn't be such a huge thing? the novel still has yuuri and wolfram as fiances but they're more like friends, and it's obvs in the novel that yuuri is glad for wolfram being by him and he feels like he doesn't have to feel completely protected by wolfram since they look around the same age. wolfram cares for yuuri a lot too but it's not like... gay... it's just bromance and loyalty uwu ~~i'm the type that unless it's not a real bl series i would rather not have blatant bl in the canon. leave that to doujinshis plz~~

so yeah, aside from all the crazy shipping that goes on in the anime.

i'm glad to see that sara and yuuri were able to have a relationship that could only happen in the anime that's like... just not two dimensional... ~~aside from the fact that i want to punch anime yuuri in the face and cry at him~~ but yeah i can see that it won't exactly be like that in novel. but i really liked that relationship too...

the novel yuuri is pretty slow because he's well, yuuri but i think one of the whole points of the sara arc was for yuuri to learn a little that trusting isn't always the best of ends. but in the end he doesn't hate sara either. he still tries to help sara with his own problems (with yelshi and thinking that he's completely hated by his mother since he didn't have strong houjutsu) but at the same time approaches him with caution. sara's not completely saved nor are they friends but i think he was able to change his views a little and yuuri helped out with that. also the fact that yelshi was a tad bit off his rocker...

the novel sara is a king, someone who stands up top of others through and through, i think. but he tried hard to be that kind of person because his felt his mother didn't want him. yuuri notices that and there's a monologue where he said at first yuuri was jealous of sara who was as young as him but was so fit for a king. but after everything, yuuri instead feels sorry for sara who's never experienced defeat. for not being able to realize that his mother did care for sara greatly. in the end when yuuri and co leave sara at seisakoku so that sara can help out yelshi rebuild the country, sara asks if yuuri's okay with that because he might take over seisakoku and such. and yuuri answers that he can try but it would be hard because of all the freed slaves and such. he doesn't try to fix everything, but just lets it leave it in the hands of the country... (i feel like anime yuuri would just try to make everything better but not do anything himself...) and instead tells sara to support yelshi and get together as siblings again to which sara replies "it's difficult having a idiotic brother." but you can kinda tell sara doesn't hate yelshi...

idk what i am saying anymore it's all over the place. the thing is, yuuri and sara in the novel aren't friends, but kind of like rivals but not really. i think they were both jealous of each other at first because yuuri had friends and love from others and sara was a proper king. i liked that they didn't end up being like whoooo part of the yuuri crew now let's aim for world peace, but left it open. sara isn't an ally but isn't an enemy either. and that's more realistic then everyone being friends if you think of countries...

yeah the whole FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC theme of the anime is kind of heavy handed especially in the first two seasons where like every problem is solved with "and then yuuri befriended them and the countries never fought again". and all that just makes those early villains that much dumber because like. wow you keep failing to catch/kill this guy who's famous for wanting to be friends with everyone, why did it take three seasons to get an antagonist who thought to just pretend to be his friend??? sara is literally the smartest person in the whole damn anime just for that.

and the whole thing with him did get a good dose of that idealistic anime filter but compared to the first two seasons, sara's arc is noticeably darker and more dramatic. idk maybe they just realized they could show blood on tv or something, because conrad took like five arrows to the torso earlier in the series and there was like no blood and yuuri was just like "oh nooo", then third season happens and sara takes a single arrow to the chest and it looked like a bucket of blood had been dumped on him and yuuri rages and destroys everything and it's all metal as shit

but yeah they got a happy ending but at least they didn't just go straight out with "and now there's world peace because they're friends yaaay". instead they pretty much just left it with small shimaron and shin makoku being allies and sara teasing yuuri that he should be careful because there are ambitious men out there like him that might make him regret being so trusting, and sara implies vague plans to take over large shimaron and things are kinda settled with alazon but sara's still not outright forgiving her because PRIDE

wait is sara a full-blooded shinzoku in the novels or is he still half human i just realized i have no idea

it's still a mystery why nhk thinks blood is absolutely terrible for children or whatever but two guys being gay is completely okay. anyway, yeah even in the novel the sara arc was just all sorts of feelings and depressing and general "I CAN'T TAKE THIS MUCH SRSNESS WHERE IS ALL THE LAUGHTER..." ~~the whole scene in the underground labyrinth hnnngh painful~~ i think sara is definitely one of the smartest people in both kkm series... and a proper antagonist not like "you're an antagonist but i know you're going to be friends later on". ~~then there's batshit yelshi~~

also i can't understand anime yuuri because he rages and destroys shit real quickly. like he's all "PEACE NO FIGHTING" five seconds later "RWAR RWAR" and i'm like "wait that was too quick". in the novel he lately doesn't really destroy things when he goes to maou mode anymore, (then there's that other "personality" in him we have no explanation of that's violent) and he has a better handle of his powers. does anime yuuri ever get a handle of his powers or not destroy things in the process....

sara is fabulous okay. he has pride of an upper class person, and that's bad at times but at the same time it's just... fabulous saralegi. lol idk what i am saying. also novel sara still wants to keep yuuri as a pet because he thinks maous are interesting creatures which makes me laugh.

and he's still half human the dad was the king of small shimaron (gilbert) but he has the fact that he's a shinzoku and has a twin brother hidden

yuuri gets a little better about all that? not a ton but like he kind of gets used to it and he only really ever went berserk the two times sara made him, by tricking him into a huge rage the first time and then just straight-up hypnotizing him the second. there's actually this giant fanfic that i love to death and kind of headcanon as a fourth season because it takes the anime yuuri and gets him to develop into something closer to the novel version in a realistic way and simultaneously adds some progress to his relationship with wolf in a way that makes sense if you're going with the whole HI HAVE I MENTIONED I AM HETEROSEXUAL TODAY starting point the anime kept going all the way to the end

also the plot was great and the author wrote sara really well and yeah you can guess why i liked it so much (do you realize how little fic there is that involves sara at all, let alone in a way that isn't just character bashing???)

ahhh i see. yeah novel yuuri hasn't gone berserk since caloria but instead he has crazy things happening which plz author explain we want new volumes...

and ahhh i hardly read fics for kkm but i do love actually well thought out fics. like there are types that you just want to read for your shipping urges and moe time, and there are some you just love for its proper fanfiction based on the series and making it realistic...

i tend to like mostly all characters so i usually tend to stay away from fanfiction of canons that i know is shipheavy... because guuu chara bash...

yeah i kind of gave up looking through most kkm fic because so much of it is just trash or so heavily ship-focused that i can't even be bothered. i only found that one because the author wrote a little oneshot thing upon someone's request of sara and one of the original characters from the fic, and i read it pretty much just like ok whatever it involves sara and it's just a oneshot i'll give it a try

and then i was really curious and went to the original fic and read through all thirty something chapters and was pretty much just like "yo this could actually be a script for a fourth season holy shit" and threw a bunch of fanart at the author in a fit of joy

ajslkfad best thing ever nhk should hire that person and find guts to air blood and everything

or kkm should just find a new production and remake the series following the novel i would love that greatly yes b r e a t h

we can only dream ; ; nah man i at least had hopes for the manga adaptation since it seems to be following the novel storyline but then the company publishing it in english went under and no one else picked it up and no one's translating it and sob i think i'm just fated to never get to read anything kkm ever. all i can do is stare wistfully at the raw manga scans and sigh and pray that someone picks it up someday...

ahhh yeah kkm is such a nice series full of laughter, seriousness, relationships, and just all sorts of nice things it should get more recognition ... orz..... (when i was writing out the history for yuuri app i was realized just how much heavy themes this series takes on like monarchism, colonizations, slavery, class differences, racial tensions...)

ANYWAY

somarium has yuuri from the novel after everything with sara and wolfram there is from the anime from the beginning of the third series so he doesn't even know who sara is. and they still haven't finished figuring that they're from two different worlds (sortof). so.
