I don't know if you're interested in AU games (and I totally understand if not!), but I'm apping Ivar over at [community profile] savetheearth in a couple weeks and I'd love to play against a Jude!

The game's a combination AU/memory loss game where you play a reincarnation of your character who can slowly regain their canon selves' memories and traits. I think the size/activity fits (~200 characters right now, generally a few posts per day), though how much it fits your preferences sort of depends on how you play or what you app in with. Some of the characters do deal with organization/political stuff as far as I know, and there's some exploration logs now and then. The game's just finished up its first season and transitioning to the next with a new location opening up just recently, so things look to get even more interesting soon.

Oh, hey there! I was actually just giving your game ad a look. Good timing!

I've got a couple questions about the game that the FAQ doesn't really cover. Do you mind if I send them your way?

Yeah, go ahead!

Perfect! The big one is a clarification on the backtagging thing. I know a lot of people are willing to backtag, but I really do need to rely on it to make AC. Typically, tag all of my threads at least a few times a day even on bad days. But work does sometimes saddle me with 6-day work weeks, so that means there's going to be 3 to 5 day stretches where I can only tag very slowly or not at all.

Basically, I just want to be sure that threads more than a week or two old aren't regularly dropped.

Not in my experience, no. My tagging pattern gets like that when school gets bad and I haven't really noticed any problems with backtagging.

Aha, alright! Thank you both of you. And sorry for the delay, work wiped me out yesterday.

Next question is about plotting! I've heard that getting involved can be sort of difficult if your character doesn't have many useful skills, and that even then the sorts of skills that are most desired/needed aren't immediately obvious. Do you know if characters with healing or medical skills generally have an easier, harder, or average time finding plot slots?

As a clarifying point, I don't mind having to work hard to get involved! I'd just like to know what to expect.

Okay, first I have to put a "this is what I've seen and heard/your mileage may vary" disclaimer on this - other people may disagree! The character I currently play in the game isn't one for getting super-involved by nature and that's colored my experience at this game, although that might finally change in the future (in part due to echoing back her medical background, incidentally).

As far as I know we have one or two healers and a couple doctors, most prominently the ones at the LSR clinic. The clinic's a pretty important place to the network folks in general, so if you've got a place there chances are there's opportunities for involvement. I'm less familiar with the healer/battle-ready medic types, but I know we have at least one or two and they've been involved in stuff like sewer exporation and the farmhouse battle towards the end of Season 1. So while I can't definitively give you an estimate on the difficulty I don't think it should be hard finding plot opportunities!
peacefulwinter: (That's what I think.)

I play Winter here at StE; while she's not the archetype you're looking at, I think Jude will have a fairly easy time with finding ways to get into plot, even combat-heavy plots. The healers we presently have near to hand do their jobs well, but generally don't get anywhere too near the front lines. Jude is a unique exception here - he's conveniently tanky enough to survive a couple of hits, and he can generally do what he wants. I don't think he'd want to actually be the person leading the charge - we've got Gundams, magical girls, and Touhou characters for that, among others that aren't coming off the top of my CR head - but he'd be comfortable being able to deploy onto the battlefield where his abilities are most immediately useful.

That said, there are a lot of ways to get into plot without necessarily having to wait for big stuff - Jude is unique in that he can fill a multitude of roles well, and once his reincarnation has even a portion of that back, he'd be versatile enough to do a lot of things around Locke City. You can use your reincarnation's history to your advantage here; if there's a role you want to fill, start with a reincarnation that can at least do it a little bit, and then you can chart out the Echoes you want to get so you have an idea of where you're going. Having a plan is crucial; taking stuff randomly leads to a character that feels all over the place. But if you know where you want to go, you can work out what you want to have, and that gives you the power to fit into a role and have a strong presence in the game.

A good AU can even form that presence before you get a whole lot of Echoes back. If you have a personality that attracts people of any particular kind - or a starting role that gives you non-network access to a number of characters - it gives you a way into plot, and once you start to get back powers that manifest in any visible way, everything starts to snowball together, and you'll have a very real way to interact with the plot. That's what I've found, at least. My initial vision for Winter with the direction of her Echoes was... not as clear as I'd have liked, but because she had access to a number of characters and could leverage that in a very real way, she was still able to connect with the plot even when she had no powers except for a talking plush toy - in fact, she didn't have anything except memories and that plush toy for four months, but I've never really wanted for things to do.

...That's my experience, and sorry it's so terribly long, but hopefully it helps a little.

Being a backtagger myself, I can say that I've generally had good experiences here. There are a few boomerangers, but even among those there are ones that will backtag for a good long time, and there are a few extremely good backtaggers that you can definitely rely on to not drop your thread for a good long while. Sure, some players aren't good at it, but I've found that it's easy to find those that you can rely on to backtag.
